Banned Books

If you have been into the library recently, you may be wondering why we have a table with books wrapped up in brown paper. The answer is that we are highlighting some books that have been challenged in both the UK and the US for various reasons, such as religious viewpoints, offensive language and unsuitability for the age group.

Some examples of books that have been banned are: Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult, The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier, Gossip Girl by Cecily Von Ziegesar, and His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman.

All the books shown above are available to borrow from the library- feel free to ignore the sign telling you not to read these books!

If you would like more information on banned books, the National Library of Scotland is running a banned books exhibition until October 30th and entry is free! Please consult the National Library of Scotland's website for additional information: http://www.nls.uk/exhibitions/banned-books

We are big fans of Helen Grant in the Library and think this is her best book yet - highly recommended!

Wish Me Dead by Helen Grant

The funny thing is I never even meant the first one. Now I bitterly regret visiting the cursed witch's house, deep in the middle of the forest. It's where I made my wishes.I wished Klara Klein dead. It came true. I wished for the most gorgeous boy in town to finally notice me. It came true. I wished to be rid of the poisonous busybody who destroyed my family. It came true.

I didn't mean for this to happen. Not me, Steffi Nett, the shy one who never says anything. But as the body count increases with every wish I make . . .who else could it be?

Recommendations Round-up

Since it's the summer holidays and I have a bit of extra time I thought I'd do a brief round-up of some of my recent recommended reading. To save space I haven't included a blurb or synopsis but please click on the titles for more details on the story.

I've just caught up with this series, which I've been meaning to read for a while, and I absolutely love it! A great combination of a boarding school story, spies, action and adventure, with even a little bit of romance thrown in. Highly recommended for a quick, fun read.

The third book in the Drake Chronicles series and I think my favourite so far. If you like vampires, some evil and some not, working alongside vampire hunters with a dash of humour and romance this series is for you. I'd also recommend the Evernight series by Claudia Gray.

Another YA book which focuses on a future world where society is very different. There is a bit of a fashion for dystopian YA books at the moment but I think this one stands out. Also recommended on this theme The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Matched by Ally Condie, Uglies by Scott Westerfeld.
