If you have been into the library recently, you may be wondering why we have a table with books wrapped up in brown paper. The answer is that we are highlighting some books that have been challenged in both the UK and the US for various reasons, such as religious viewpoints, offensive language and unsuitability for the age group.
Some examples of books that have been banned are: Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult, The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier, Gossip Girl by Cecily Von Ziegesar, and His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman.
All the books shown above are available to borrow from the library- feel free to ignore the sign telling you not to read these books!
If you would like more information on banned books, the National Library of Scotland is running a banned books exhibition until October 30th and entry is free! Please consult the National Library of Scotland's website for additional information: http://www.nls.uk/exhibitions/banned-books
